Is Islam a religion of peace?

Islam is a religion of total surrender to Allah, and also a religion of peace. But unfortunate there are Muslims who are fighting for freedom,and are turning to fundamentalism and they are becoming terrorists, cause they want their rights to live in their own country with out any foreigners pulling the strings from above.
