How do I prepare a Durian Fruit?

Durians smell SO strongly and are SO objectionable to so many people that in some countries people are prohibited from bringing them into many types of businesses, etc. (especially hotels). Having never tried one before, I would suggest cutting it open in your yard or garage in case it's a nasty surprise.
